Let me just start this off by saying, filet crochet is super fun, but definitely a learning curve! I started this blanket three times before I was happy with how it was coming out. That doesn’t even count all the charts I made to try to get it just right! I made this blanket for my daughter, but I think it would be a special gift for anyone in your life that you love! So let’s get into it!
How to Filet Crochet
Filet crochet has its own set of rules. Basically, the piece is made of different “open” or “closed” cells. Each square in the graph represents one of these cells (in my chart the white squares represent closed cells and the black represent open cells, but I’ve seen patterns where this is reversed so always read your patterns carefully before starting). The closed cells are made up of four double crochets while the open cells are made of two chains followed by a double crochet. Here’s where it’s tricky though. The fourth stitch of every cell also acts as the first stitch of the next cell. To count this, I read the pattern as “1, 2, 3, 4, 2, 3, 4, 2, 3, 4…”
So basically each square represents 4 stitches, and each square shares one stitch. It’s difficult at first but once you get the hang of it it becomes very easy to follow!
Border
I found this super cute border on YouTube! I had to start and restart a ton of tutorials before I found one I liked and this one was definitely worth the trial and error because it’s absolutely perfect!

For this blanket I used one and half skeins of Lion Brand Pound of Love Yarn in Cherise and not even a quarter of a skein of Big Twist Variaty Yellow. These yarns are a size 4 and I used a 4.5 mm crochet hook to keep those double crochets tight together.
Conclusion
I hope you enjoy this unique pattern and that whoever you gift it to loves it very much! As always I’d love to see pictures of your work, so you can email them to me! Thanks for reading!
